How did Vir get its name? Vir Island was first mentioned in 1069 in the Charter of King Peter Krešimir IV under the name of Ueru. Scholars surmise that the name is of old-Mediterranean origin and that it means "pasture".
Although Vir has a reputation for being an overbuilt island, it should be noted that real estate takes up only 15% of the island, while the other 85% is unspoiled nature.
The goal of the Belgian organization European Best Destinations is to promote culture and tourism in Europe. They have been cooperating with the major European tourist boards since 2009 and have given awards to the most successful ones. "A city that is equal parts traditional and modern and which has the most beautiful sunset in the world, the Sea Organ and is unlike any other city - all of this is Zadar, which was named the best European destination in 2016", Zadar Tourist Board proudly exclaims.
Welcome to Dalmatia. Just take it easy because here everything seems to move in slow motion. After arriving on Vir, you can check into the apartment that is close to the beach. The local restaurants and cafés with terraces in the shade and the plentiful farmers' and fish markets are modest, but have an authentic local flavor. In the evening you will be greeted by a friendly windsurfing instructor who will introduce you to the weekly itinerary. You'll have the rest of the evening to walk around the island and wander through the alleys of Vir. We suggest that you go to bed early, so that you can rest from your trip and be up and ready for your first surfing adventure.
It's windsurfing time. One-hour beginners' lessons will take place every morning and the entire course has 6 hours worth of lessons. You'll learn how to maintain balance on the board as well as some basic maneuvers. Once you feel the speed, you'll be thrilled. This course is aimed at beginners who want to enrich their holiday by trying something new. We know that you'll want to relax, which is why the course is spread over six days, so that you can have plenty of time for entertainment and other activities. Since Vir is a small island, you'll get to explore various beaches depending on the direction of the wind. Exciting, isn't it? At the end of each day, you'll be in for a real treat once you gaze upon the spectacular sunset. You can spend few nights sipping on cocktails at one of Vir's popular bars or in the comfort of your apartment where you can regale the others with stories of your surfing adventures.
Feel free to sleep in and lounge in your bed. Your windsurfing course is drawing to a close, which is why today we will take you on a wonderful excursion to the best European destination, the city of Zadar. It is easy to reach Zadar from Vir, since there are several bus lines connecting the two places and you can also enjoy a pleasant ride through the adjacent towns. After arriving in Zadar, you will be greeted by your private tour guide who will introduce you to the charm of this gorgeous and extremely attractive city. Zadar is a veritable treasure trove of historic landmarks and stone-paved streets where tradition meets the modern way of life. Prepare your senses for a true spectacle of the Sea Organ. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and listen to the music of the sea. Can you hear its song? In addition to this fulfilling audio experience, we also have a captivating visual experience. "A Salute to the Sun" is a unique art installation that transforms solar energy into a light show. Since all surfers wish to get in touch with nature, we are convinced that this will be a moment you will never forget. After dinner, we will be returning to Vir for an overnight stay.
We recommend that you have a delicious dinner at the Harbor Cookhouse with the most beautiful interior in Zadar. You will undoubtedly be delighted by the ambience as well as the fine food.
After some windsurfing in the morning, we have prepared something a bit more laid back. Stand Up Paddling is the fastest growing water sport and is appropriate for all ages. It is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to explore the island of Vir in a slightly different way. You will also get to see the restored Kaštelin Tower, which is one of the most popular attractions on Vir. After some light paddling, unwind by listening to the murmur of the sea and let the Sun recharge you with its energy. If you're looking for one last adrenaline fix, rent a bike and go on a tour of Vir. There are numerous bike paths on the island adapted for recreational cyclists as well as for those somewhat more experienced. Spend your last night at one of the local restaurants and toast to a swift return to Vir with a glass of fine wine.
Catch the first rays of sunshine in the morning and take one last dip before your trip. It's time to check out of the apartment and head back home.
