You’ll get to know this vivacious port town whose indigenous residents speak a weird mix of Italian and Croatian that no one else can understand. Delving into the secrets of the city is easy – your host knows where rockers hang out, where to find good music, which places have the best craft beer, and where to eat the tastiest food to your liking.
Although Rijeka is the third largest city in Croatia, you’ll be able to cover everything on foot without much hassle. Your hostel will be right at the heart of the city. And, if by any chance your crew is interested into visiting any of those “mainstream” landmarks, like the famous Vintage Computer Museum or the Astronomical Centre Rijeka, we’ll hook you up!
Take a stroll along the famous promenade called Korzo and lounge in one of the cafés or 'read the history' of the town from the facades of the buildings
There are several things not to miss when in Rijeka (eng. River) and your host will make sure to take you there or to explain how to get there yourselves.
One of them is the semi ruined 13th century Trsat Castle that offers magnificent vistas from its bastions and ramparts, a perfect example of the city’s unusual, turbulent past – don’t worry, your host will tell you something about that, too.
You can also choose to visit one of the most praised Rijeka museums – the unique Peek & Poke Computer Museum, where you can see how much the computer world has changed over the last few decades. Perhaps you will be even more interested in the Childhood Museum, a unique institution with a seal of complete authenticity. All exhibits were donated by or borrowed from the real people, giving you an insight into their childhood, and some of the toys are so old that you have either completely forgotten about them or have never seen them.
Locals speak a weird mix of Italian and Croatian, but the language definitely won't be an obstacle. And remember, first beer is on us!
Welcome to Rijeka! Start your adventure with a stroll along Korzo Street, where your walking tour begins. Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere as you pass by locals chatting in cafés and head towards the iconic Clock Tower at the Old Town's entrance.
If luck is on your side, you'll encounter the city's good spirit—an old rocker playing his electric guitar. Next, marvel at the cathedral of St. Vitus, affectionately known as the "Church-Cake" by locals. Stop for refreshments at the Celtic café Bard pub, where your host will share intriguing tales about Rijeka.
Get ready for a pub tour, starting with the Leaning Tower of Rijeka. Visit King's café food pub, Bačva pub, River pub, and more. The first beer is on us! Let the fun begin.
Carefully count your steps as you climb the stairs to enjoy the night vista from Trsat castle. Here's a hint why - it's because of the local legend that will give you goosebumps!
After a restful night, your host will take you to Trsat, a steep hill overlooking the Rječina River canyon. From the tower of Trsat Castle, you'll see why this was a vital strategic location in ancient times.
For the adventurous, take the Trsat stairs. Legend has it that the devil himself broke the stairs in anger, leaving their exact number a mystery. At the top, discuss your count with locals and take a photo with the dragon guardian of the city. Enjoy a coffee at a charming café and let your host introduce you to several clubs for the evening.
Return to your hostel to rest and prepare for a night out at one of Rijeka's rock clubs, as recommended by your host.
Savor your last morning in Rijeka with a relaxing stroll along the main breakwater, "Molo longo," stretching 1,707 meters. Experience the city from the sea or mingle with locals at the bustling central market.
