You’ll get to know this vivacious port town whose indigenous residents speak a weird mix of Italian and Croatian that no one else can understand. Delving into the secrets of the city is easy – your host knows where rockers hang out, where to find good music, which places have the best craft beer, and where to eat the tastiest food to your liking.

Although Rijeka is the third largest city in Croatia, you’ll be able to cover everything on foot without much hassle. Your hostel will be right at the heart of the city. And, if by any chance your crew is interested into visiting any of those “mainstream” landmarks, like the famous Vintage Computer Museum or the Astronomical Centre Rijeka, we’ll hook you up!

There are several things not to miss when in Rijeka (eng. River) and your host will make sure to take you there or to explain how to get there yourselves.

One of them is the semi ruined 13th century Trsat Castle that offers magnificent vistas from its bastions and ramparts, a perfect example of the city’s unusual, turbulent past – don’t worry, your host will tell you something about that, too.

You can also choose to visit one of the most praised Rijeka museums – the unique Peek & Poke Computer Museum, where you can see how much the computer world has changed over the last few decades. Perhaps you will be even more interested in the Childhood Museum, a unique institution with a seal of complete authenticity. All exhibits were donated by or borrowed from the real people, giving you an insight into their childhood, and some of the toys are so old that you have either completely forgotten about them or have never seen them.

Day-by-day itinerary

DAY 1

Friday: Rijeka City Tour

Welcome to Rijeka. There's no better way to get a feel for the soul of Rijeka than to take a stroll along Korzo Street, where the walking city tour in the company of your host will start.

Through the city crowd and people who are resting and talking on cafés’ terraces, you will reach the Clock Tower, the Rijeka city symbol located at the entrance to the Old Town.

If you are lucky, here you will meet the old rocker, the good spirit of the city, playing his electric guitar. Soon after that, you will see Rijeka cathedral of St. Vitus, better known among locals as Church - Cake.

Right next to it is the Celtic café Bard pub, where you can get some refreshments, and your host will tell you some interesting stories about the city.

Don't worry, it's not the beer, the Leaning Tower of Rijeka is really sloping. But since you're ready, a tour of famous Rijeka pubs can begin; you will visit King's café food pub, Bačva pub, River pub and others... Now the real fun can start, the first beer is on us!

DAY 2

Saturday: Trsat Castle

Get a good night's sleep, and then (maybe even in the afternoon) your host will take you to Trsat, a steep hill above the canyon of Rječina river, looking like it watches over the city. As soon as you take a look from the tower of the Trsat Castle, it will be clear to you that in ancient times this was an important strategic location for anyone who wanted to control the surrounding area.

We'll find out who the real Night Owl is – you can get to Trsat by bus, but the most impressive way to approach Trsat castle is via the Trsat stairs. At the top, you will discuss whether you have counted them correctly – among the inhabitants of the city there’s the legend of the devil who broke Trsat stairs in anger so that no one would know their exact number. And that is just one of the many legends about Trsat...

At the Castle, make sure to take a photo with the dragon – the guardian of the city, then have a cup of coffee in one of the nice café bars, just like locals do. The host will also show you several clubs that you can visit in the evening.

After returning to the hostel, rest and get ready for a party at some of the rock clubs recommended by your host.

DAY 3

Sunday: Make the most of the morning

Make the most of the morning before departure and take a relaxing stroll along the main breakwater, known as the „Molo longo“ (Long pier), due to its 1,707 metres in length and experience Rijeka "from the sea" or shop like a true Rijeka citizen at the lively central market. Now you are ready to travel home, but do not forget – the city that flows is always eager to welcome you back!
