Mediterranean life and cuisine are fundamental to the identity of the people living in this area, and they represent the inheritance of diverse cultures and influences, continually passed down through the generations, so you can feel the mutual connectivity of the inhabitants at the time. To connect better with this culture, you will be accommodated at the host’s with his family, who will be at your disposal for the duration of your stay.
In the southernmost Croatian airport, Dubrovnik, you will be welcomed by the host Marin (or by one of his sons) who will take you to his agricultural rural estate in Konavle, a 10-min drive away.
This family estate expands to 3 000 m2, it has a stone-built house several centuries old and it ideally represents the rural life, both of the past and the present day. On the top level of the house, there is a cosy apartment with all household supplies you will need in the following 6 days of your stay. Should you require additional assistance or service, your hosts will be on the other side of the house, with a separate entrance, guaranteeing mutual privacy and ensuring fast service.
The hosts welcome you once again, with a delicious dinner made from regional ingredients: home-made oil-cured cheese, smoked ham, roasted peppers, eggplants, olive oil, home-made bread, home-made cake and welcome drinks.
The morning shall start with a typical local breakfast after which you will be exploring the estate: a garden with partly agricultural products, threshing floor, wine press and stone exhibits. You will see domestic animals strolling freely throughout the estate – goats and chickens, and you can feed them. Enjoy the beautiful sea view, forests, gardens and vineyards.
The culinary school is scheduled in the afternoon. Together with your host Marin, you will prepare veal roast under the bell with garden vegetables. In the meantime, as the meal roasts, a professional guide will pick you up and take you to a trip to the village of Čilipi to visit the County museum. Čilipi are a cultural centre of Konavle, known for their folklore events where you will meet the traditions of Konavle and enjoy the well-known Konavle national costume, the dances and the traditional Konavle embroidery. The County museum of Konavle holds national costumes of women and men, jewellery, weapons, musical instruments, paintings and everything treasured from Konavle from diverse periods.
Return to the estate and enjoying together the lunch you’ve prepared.
The plans for late afternoon include a Konavle embroidery workshop, where you will make embroidery from silkworms at the arts atelier. This area is notable for the making of raw silk from silkworms, so we are offering you to make your own souvenir, whilst tasting home-made cake and cheese.
Return to the estate, relaxation and overnight stay.
A new morning starts with a delicious breakfast once again, and the local guide will then take you on an adventure through Konavle villages with wine tasting rooms and a generous gastronomic offer. To this day, Konavle settlements have preserved the appearance of traditional stone architecture that tells many stories: the nurturing of all life segments, the culture of living, land cultivation and consideration for traditional principles, and the feeling of belonging. At one such household you will have Mediterranean chicken with polenta for lunch.
You will continue exploring this unique Konavle landscape on horseback. The trip is under guide’s control: safe for both the beginners and first-timers as the trail is not demanding, and the ride is slow for a complete peace of mind through unexplored forest trails and the shore of Konavle rocks.
The evening ends with return to the estate, a light dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, a visit to Cavtat is scheduled, a former village that evolved into a beautiful Mediterranean fishing relaxing town, built from white stones, with many alleys, green oases, cafés and restaurants.
After that, you will take a half an hour boat trip to another former village, today one of the most beautiful cities under the city walls – Dubrovnik.
Given the abundant gastronomic offer, you get to choose today’s lunch and dinner.
Return to the estate and overnight stay.
A visit to the winery comes after breakfast, where you are welcomed by another kind host who will greet you with an aperitif (fig, herbal or prosecco), you will have a look around the museum, the winery and the vineyards and be given a short historical description of wine growing and wine production in the region, and taste 4 types of cheese and home-made products for lunch (cheese, bread, smoked ham, seasonal salad, fruit or cake).
The professional guide will then take you to visit the Sokol fortress situated on the mountain pass at the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. This impressive fortress used to safeguard the Croatian border, and today it depicts ideally the medieval period, granting a unique view at the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding landscape.
The next destination is one of the many beautiful estates, with the sightseeing of the old stone mill at the river Ljuta, and a dinner – Dubrovnik pašticada with gnocchi.
