Before you start your trip, take a minute to get acquainted with the places you are about to visit.

Croatian Zagorje

Croatian Zagorje (Hrvatsko Zagorje) is a northwest region of Croatia. It includes areas around the cities of Krapina and Varaždin as well as the outskirts of Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. Rich in history and cultural heritage, Croatian Zagorje offers numerous medieval castles and fortifications, churches and archaeological sites that attract visitors and treasure numerous history tales as well as folk legends. Throughout history, when there was great danger from the Turks, many people rushed into the safe embrace of Zagorje. Most of the nobility moved to this region and started to build castles and fortifications there. Today Veliki Tabor and Trakošćan are the most famous ones.

Croatian Zagorje and its famous hills, called “Zagorski bregi”, attract and invite you to spend peaceful moments in nature. The region is also well known for its wine and culinary delicacies as well as for its many thermal springs known since Roman times.

The magical flavours of the past eras are sure to attract even the most demanding guests. Traditional Zagorje dishes and those created by combining the traditional and modern preparation methods using ingredients grown on the hills along the river Sutla are served straight from the fragrant kitchens and stove ovens on farms and restaurants.

Krapinske Toplice

Krapinske Toplice is a beautiful, well-arranged, quiet town, only 45 km far away from Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. It is surrounded by charming hills adorned with vineyards and traditional villages. Famous for its vine and traditional cuisine, Krapinske Toplice became a popular place for vacations and tourists looking to experience life away from big cities, or simply to enjoy many wellness and spa treatments.

The water of Krapinske Toplice is rated as the 6th highest quality water in Europe, and it proves to be very favourable against rheumatism, spine diseases, neuromuscular disorders, diabetes with complications in joints, posttraumatic conditions before and after orthopedical, surgical and neurosurgical procedures on the musculoskeletal system of the body, heart diseases and peripheral vascular diseases, improving post-infarction and post-procedure conditions.

The colourful hills surrounding Krapinske Toplice are ideal for your stay in nature. Zagorje offers also many walking trails. You can choose between 3 basic routes in the “Walking ring of Krapinske Toplice”, depending on your physical condition: medical, recreative or trim path.

Medical path – walking these paths represents a pleasant walk, and an adequate choice of a program provides the return of some heart and vascular functions to patients as well as making a habit to maintain the current functions of working properly. People with health problems (cardiovascular disorders) can walk these paths but they are required to consult their physician before they go for a walk.

Recreative paths – paths are for free movement, relaxation, health maintenance and cardio-vascular diseases prevention.

Trim path – paths that are suitable for increasing body condition for healthy persons. Besides the exercise program, walking these paths helps to increase physical preparedness and to preserve strength.

There are numerous places that you can visit in your free time. The seaside is only 2 hours away, and you are only half an hour away from the country’s capital city, Zagreb.

The miraculous statue of Our Lady, with baby Jesus in her arms is black because it got burned in the fire that engulfed the Basilica in 1880.

Marija Bistrica is also known for its gingerbread, honey products, wood, and clay products.

The recipe is the same for all makers of gingerbread, utilizing flour, sugar, water and baking soda – plus the obligatory spices. The gingerbread is shaped into moulds, baked, dried and painted with edible colours. Each craftsperson decorates gingerbread in a specific way, often with pictures, small mirrors and verses or messages - a heart is the most common motif, and is frequently prepared for marriages. Gingerbread as well as traditional manufacturing of children’s wooden toys in Croatian Zagorje is inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Croatian Zagorje is famous for its vineyards and quality wines. A word of welcome will be followed by a tour of the wine cellar, an introduction to wine production technology and wine tasting. You will taste 5 varieties of wine produced according to ecological principles, such as Pinot Gris, Sauvignon blanc, Selectio and other, hazelnuts from their organic production, dried and fresh fruit.

The tasting is followed by a tour of the Oršić Castle in Gornja Stubica. The castle was the feudal residence of the Oršić family until the last members relocated in 1924. At the end of the sixties and the beginning of the seventies, the castle was thoroughly renewed and transformed into a Museum of the Peasants' uprise which deals with a tragic event that occurred in 1573 in this very area. Around the castle, there is a park with a huge monument dedicated to the Peasants' uprise and its leader Matija Gubec, made by a prominent Croatian sculptor Antun Augustinčić.

A traditional dinner is waiting for you at the rural estate Vuglec Breg, where you will try out specialities of Zagorje traditional cuisine. The estate stretches over an area of 12 hectares and from the peak of the hill, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding hills dotted with houses, and churches. On the northern side of ''Vuglec Breg,'' there is a horse barn, a little pond, lawns and walking paths.
